It never rains but it pours.

There was so much nostalgia in the sound of rain. So much warmth. Those cozy nights hidden beneath the duvet while an endless sonata pattered against the roof, and the world outside was warped and camouflaged by a drizzled window. Looking out on a wet day was as weird and wonderful as peering into a bauble. The falling raindrops obscured all, leaving everything to the imagination.

Sadly, I wasn't hiding beneath a duvet.

Only an umbrella fit for one.

“Your face looks dull,” said Sonoda, showing concern in her usual making children cry way. “Were you unsuccessful in your last criminal venture?”

“No.”

“Were you successful, but the takings weren't in line with your projected profit margins?”

“No and no. The rain's getting into my socks. This is gross. I can feel the squishing in my shoes.”

Sonoda looked between me and the unrepentant sky, as if gauging which was going to cave in first.

The sound of our footsteps interspersed with the apocalypse around us, only rising above the din when we were required to skip over one of the innumerable ponds and streams running down the road in search of any dry soles to raid.

“Perhaps you'd like a moment to stop? You can upend your shoes. I'd be pleased to wait.”

“No, no. I couldn't do that.”

“Oh? Why not?”

“You'd have to carry the umbrella on your own. I'm not so impolite as to do that to you. Holding the umbrella is my duty.”

Apparently, Sonoda wasn't impervious to the currents.

Despite lamenting over her brittle arms, she'd attempted to wrestle control of the umbrella back within moments of my handle holding responsibilities, unhappy at the canopy distribution I was obviously favouring towards myself.

As a result, the two of us clung to the handle, engaged in a waltz that could only earn accolades from a blind person.

“I'm the host of this umbrella. A guest, however unwelcome, shouldn't have to shoulder the burden of management.”

“It's precisely because I'm a welcome and invited guest that I should do my part. Didn't you say your grip was fading? Why are you holding on so tightly?”

“I have little choice. The last time your shoulder barged into mine, the impact was so violent that I was forced to grasp hold of the umbrella to avoid a premeditated fall. I barely survived the encounter.”

“That's a relief. Although I'm not sure what incident you're referring to. Could it be when you almost knocked me over because you saw a car coming and thought you'd get splashed? Your shoes are already drowned, aren't they? What's the worst that can happen?”

“My lace underwear will be ruined.”

I almost threw the umbrella to the other side of the road.
